Emergency Appeal: Mozambique Cyclone
On Thursday 14th March, a massive cyclone hit Mozambique in what the UN has described as possibly the worst disaster to ever hit the Southern hemisphere. Across the region, hundreds of people lost their lives, and thousands were displaced from their homes by floods and lack of food and water.
Oasis works out of Beira, which was the first place to be hit. Despite the damage to their own homes, in the days after the cyclone the team have been distributing emergency rice and food packages. In recent days, cholera has broken out, and we have been providing around 500 families with water purification tablets and hygiene training.
Over the coming weeks we’ll be:
- Continuing to provide emergency assistance to as many people and communities as we are able
- Working with local communities to start to rebuild their lives, providing both practical and emotional support
- Re-establishing our water, sanitation and hygiene work
Thank you so much to everyone who has supported our emergency appeal – your support is vital to help the people and communities devastated by this catastrophic event.
The work has really only just started; after the initial weeks bringing emergency relief, we will focus on rebuilding the lives of people and communities, so please do continue to support this vital work.
